Blog Entry 7 Reflection and Evaluation

Reflection and Evaluation
In reflecting on  my blog, I  know that my thesis statement needs improvement, maybe a little  more evidence in my paragraphs. I plan on working a little harder, especially if i want to do better on my CAT-W test. I have to be able to better myself at proof-reading before submitting my work. I have a major problem in finding 400 word per essay,  I prefer reading a story than writing a story, my ideas and thoughts does not flow enough to make long flowing sentences. Writing an essay takes a lot of time and concentration, it takes practice, reading, thinking and revising.  I admire someone who can just sit and write a 500 word essay without breaking a sweat. A good writer would capture the reader's attention, and make the reader want to read on, and lets the reader know what to expect in the essay.

Blog Entry 6

Essay

Parable of the caves.
In comparision to Socrates' description of the the caves, I think I am beyond being chained because I realize of many thing being shown in the media are not accurate representations of the world, specifically stories about politics and the way women are portrayed.
I realized that I am no longer in the caves about how politics is portray in the news. Often in the news, reporters tell stories of what they want you to know, telling you their versions of the facts. Reporters tell their  stories to get you more ratings and encourage more viewers to look at their shows. Another way reports influence their viewers they get power and fame by giving their version of the truth, for example, when our new President was running for office he had one of the most popular host of television shows, Oprah Winfrey, who supported him, saying possitive things about him encouraging viewers to vote for him. The viewers voted for Obama because they believe in her (Oprah), however no one know if everything that was said about him was true or not. The media is casting the shadow around us.
In the media women are portrayed mostly skinny, blond and beautiful, but in reality there are various kind of women, brunette, redhead, blonde, coloured, full-sized and plus-sized. Rarely would you find a story of a plus-sized woman in the media. It's not just food which make people of various sizes, rest, movement, diet and genetics all play a part in determining our phisical health. I am not a big sugar fan and agree that highly processed food are empty calories. However, it's the lack of movement and sleep, along with large portions, that cause the weight gain in most people.
The prison-house world of sight maybe finally be lifted.

Blog Entry 4 - Hype

In Excerpted from Kalle Lasn "Hype", in Signs of Life in the USA: Readings on Popular Culture, as the author stated commercial pollution is all around us, even in unusual places. I agree, advertisements are most toxic of mental pollutants, in today's world everywhere you go there is advertisement. The author claims that there is an estimated 12 billion display ads, 3 million radio commercials, and more than 200,000 television commercial are dumped into America's collective unconscious. Advertisement are not confined to usual places, they are on buses, billboards stadiums, every your eyes can rest. The kids cannot look at their shows without looking at advertisement, and from the shows comes a list of stuff they want to try or buy because they see it on television. Sometimes they try to convince you that you have to buy a particular item because the television says it is so good. I sometimes buy juice or snacks for my kids and i have to help them to eat or drink it because they did not like it, instead of throwing it out.
Sometimes my kids get caught up in series television shows and they hurry up when doing home-work. Sometimes the shows have slang language and kids are being influenced, which they may think it is cool, but it's not. In their classroom, kids watch pepsi and snickers commercial.
When you listen to the radio you hear so much advertisement, sometimes i get so tired of hearing the same advertisement. Sometimes some of the commercial stays in your head, like the advertisement for the skin cream - head, shoulder, knees and toes, knees and toes, eyes and ears and head , shoulder knees and toes. I enjoy those radio channel which have commercial free music.
There is advertisement for everything you use, you eat, you drink, you wear, you drive even where you live, the area, the town, the city even the country.
America is constantly advertising, commercial are pouring in from everywhere.

Blog 2 - Reflecting on Annotation

  1. What did you get from thinking about annotations with the class?
Annotation helps me to find the main idea or the most important facts of the story. It also help to find new word and find out their meaning.

2. What did you get from writing annotations for "Is Google Making Us Stupid?" with your partner?

I think Google affects our ability to think deeply about information while encouraging us to think superficially. Our group agrees with the brain scientists that we think deeply when our minds are clam and attentive.

3. What did you learn about the reading by annotating it?

I learn to better arrange main ideas, find unfamiliar words and connect on personal experiences.

4. How may annotating make you a better writer

I hope from the first annotation that ia am better writer but maybe a little more pratice.
